Here is my final recommendation and glimpse into the groundbreaking series, "The Chosen". If you're swondering what "The Chosen" is all about, it is a faith-based production that is an insightful, creative, and genuinely strong series of streaming television (this from a self-described cinema and series lover and critic; for example, consider my review of "Children of Men"). The crew and cast are not only passionately and artistically driven to bring to life the context and much of the content across all four gospels about Jesus, but this first season displays stellar storytelling, screenwriting, direction, acting (with a mostly Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cast), and production in the midst of the creative license being taken to unveil what we may think we're already familiar with about Jesus and the stories of those who knew Him. Curious or perhaps cautious about depictions of Jesus? Whether your hesitancy is for religious reasons or artistic reasons, this thoughtful statement begins the series:

The Chosen is based on the true stories of the gospels of Jesus Christ. Some locations and timelines have been combined or condensed. Backstories and some characters or dialogue have been added. 

However, all biblical and historical context and any artistic imagination are designed to support the truth and intention of the Scriptures. Viewers are encouraged to read the gospels.

Gaius: We live in the same world, Matthew ... (Matthew says, "Next," to the next person he's collecting taxes from) ... Besides, what else are you going to do with a mind like yours? ... (Jesus passes by Matthew's tax collecting booth and turns to look at him.)

Jesus: Matthew. (Gaius reaches for his sword ... ) Matthew, son of Alphaeus ...

Matthew: Yes?

Jesus: Follow Me. 

Matthew: Me?

Jesus: (Jesus chuckles) Yes, you.

Simon: Whoa, whoa ... What are you doing? 

Matthew: You want me to join You?

Gaius: Keep moving, street preacher. 

Simon: Do you have any idea what this guy has done? Do you even know him?

Jesus: Yes. 

Gaius: (To Jesus) Listen, I said to ... (Matthew begins to leave his booth) ... What are you doing (to Matthew)? Where do you think you're going?

Matthew: Gaius, let me go.

Gaius: Have you lost your mind? You have money. Quintus protects you. No Jew lives as good as you. You're going to throw it all away?

Matthew: Yes. (Matthew gives Gaius the key to the booth and his ring.)

Simon: I don't get it. 

Jesus: You didn't get it when I chose you either. 

Simon: But this is different. I'm not a tax collector.

Jesus: Get used to different. (Jesus looks from Simon to Matthew.) ... I'm glad we passed by your booth today, Matthew. 

Matthew: Yes. 

Jesus: Shall we? We have a celebration to prepare for. 

Gaius: You will regret this, Matthew.

Simon: What's the tablet for?

Matthew: I grabbed it without thinking. I can put it back if ... 

Jesus: No, no keep it. You may yet find use for it.

Matthew: I'm not welcome at dinner parties.
