Main Session 3 | The Healthy Leader with Pastor Matt Chandler
Speaker: Pastor Matt Chandler is the lead pastor of teaching at The Village Church in Dallas, TX and is the President of the Acts 29 Network.Text: John 15:4-8
Theme: Don't think you can lead and serve better than Jesus. He's already outed you at the cross. Quit pretending. Keep following.
Jesus said, "Abide in Me and I in you. Apart from Me, you can do nothing." Do we live like we believe that? And do we lead like we're following His lead, always knowing that we need to grow in Him?
Are you withering in your leadership? If so, where are you abiding? No one starts out withering. One of the first places to look at how you're doing is your prayers. Have you stopped praying, "O God, help me?"
Don't be driven by "whats" instead of "whys". Are you driven by what you have to do or by who you are with?
We're always around sinners and among sinners. If your abiding in Jesus is not a priority, you will forget why you're serving and leading. He's always available and ready to say to you, "Come to Me. Rest. Stay awhile." Build in that time because no one else will give it to you. And if you're abiding, it will produce humility in you with those He has called you to lead because you will see just how much you need Jesus.
For example, in 2 Chronicles 26, Uzziah did well in leading until he got strong (see 2 Chronicles 26:16). When you make abiding a priority, you will notice when you drift to relying on your own strength and wisdom. Because you're going to need Jesus' strength and wisdom. "Iron sharpens iron." That's a violent shaping. It's going to get hot and hard when you're leading others.
Healthy leaders:
- Grow in self-awareness: Who or what truly rules your heart? Who or what are you giving your best effort to and striving after?
- Manage your physical vitality: Take care of what God has given you spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Don't get run down. Rest. Abide. Then work from your rest.
- Pursue spiritual depth intellectually and experientially: Who is God and what has He done? Who are you in light of who He is and what has He called you to? Correct understanding of Him, His Word, and His Spirit (i.e. doctrine) leads to generous affection with Him and for others.
- Sharpen your axe and keep learning how to receive and give grace: Are you growing wise and humble in the Scriptures? Do you not only know about God's grace, do you also know how to give it to others by the power of His Spirit? Are you a gracious leader?
