Part 6 | How Long

During the moments in our lives when we are thrown overboard and plunge into the depths of our helplessness, Jesus reminds us that He plunged deeper still to be the (7) Anchor of our souls.

Anchor of my soul, You sustain. / When i'm in the storm, You remain good to me.

He never leaves us alone in the storm. Often times the storm is required for us to remember that He is with us, and only He can calm the storm in our lives and in the lives of others.

One day Jesus said to His disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and started out. As they sailed across, Jesus settled down for a nap. But soon a fierce storm came down on the lake. The boat was filling with water, and they were in real danger. The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” When Jesus woke up, He rebuked the wind and the raging waves. Suddenly the storm stopped and all was calm. Then He asked them, “Where is your faith?” The disciples were terrified and amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “When He gives a command, even the wind and waves obey Him!” – Luke 8:22-25

What does it feel like to be absolutely surrounded by power and grace in your lowest moment? That you are not alone and that One is with you who is even more powerful than the storm? That no matter what you have done or how little your faith, you know this Someone will calm the wind and waves, give you a foundation to stand on and amaze you?

And even though it’s obvious when my outlook is ominous, / You've bound my heart and my conscience and gave me a constant calmness. / So when the pain comes like rain from the parts of life that maintains its strain, / i can put my trust in the hands that sustain. / It's profound that with all these sinking ships around me, / He surrounds me and anchors me with His grace abounding.

What is it like to have a constant calmness? Is it even possible? Or is our well-being too bound to our circumstances and the feelings of those around us? Are we too bound to how our career is going, or whether we have a partner, a house, kids, or pets?

Where do we find our self worth? If God is our anchor, if He is the only One who can give us true security and peace, then we need to hold fast to Him. He is with us in the storm. We can rest in Him in the maelstrom.

But then what do we boast in when we survive and begin to thrive? Is there a way to boast not in what we have done but in that we are completely reliant on this God we can ultimately trust in?

Check back tomorrow to see how Part 8 | Boasting shows us how we can have complete confidence while also being completely humble.

 Sully
