THANKING GOD | WORSHIP THROUGH CELEBRATION AND PRAYER

Sharing Moments of Celebration

Prayer of Thanksgiving and The Lord’s Prayer
From Jesus in Matthew 6:9-13

Our Father who is in heaven, may Your name be kept holy.
Your Kingdom come, Your will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our sin, as we have forgiven those who sin against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:
For Yours is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen

RECEIVING JESUS | WORSHIP THROUGH LISTENING AND PRAISING

1 Peter 1:22–2:3 | 1 Peter Sermon Series: Solid and Smooth: The Word Remains

Sermon Texts

Sermon Notes

"Our starting place should be, 'Lord, you know, I really don't know much about this.' Then we're more likely to think: 'I wonder, what is exciting and dramatic and interesting here, and what can I discover that's fresh this morning out of this passage?'" Name Above All Names

1. Are we solidly set on the foundation of Jesus' Word?

“Again and again, prophets … posed three essential questions …

  • Who do you worship? (God or the gods?)
  • In whom or what do you trust? (In God or in the superpowers and military might?)
  • And how are you to serve God in your times? (Through power or through trust in God despite weakness?)” – Renaissance

Supporting Sermon Text | Deuteronomy 30:9-14

9For the Lord will again take delight in prospering you, as he took delight in your fathers, 10 when you obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep his commandments and his statutes that are written in this Book of the Law, when you turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. 11 “For this commandment that I command you today is not too hard for you, neither is it far off. 12 It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will ascend to heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ 13 Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ 14 But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.

“I discovered that if I spent the time and assumed the proper attitude of openness and trust, God spoke to me through his Word.” Encounters with Jesus

2. Are we being smoothly formed by Jesus through His Word?

"When you are in moments of pain or shock, the things that come out of your mind and mouth are the most primal things in your being. And when Jesus was in such moments, out came the words of the Bible. Something like 10 percent of all the things he says in the Bible are quotations of, or allusions to, the Hebrew Scriptures. ... If Jesus Christ, the Son of God, did not presume to face the forces of evil in the world without a profound knowledge of the Bible in mind and heart, how could we try to face life any other way? It's true that this takes a great deal of time and effort. Worship, daily reading, meditation and memorization, singing, listening to teaching – all of these are necessary to become as acquainted with the Scripture as we must be. And when we are under attack – tempted to sin, or to be discouraged, or to just give up altogether – it is then that we must wrestle the words and promises of the Bible into the center of our being, to 'let the message of Christ dwell among you richly' (Colossians 3:16). It will feel very much like a fight indeed. J.C. Ryle wrote: 'True Christianity is a fight.'” – Encounters with Jesus

Peter had more reason than anyone to bank on his experiences with Jesus and the Holy Spirit. He was there when Jesus was transfigured on the mountain. He walked on the water with Jesus. He was filled with the Spirit and saw thousands repent, believe and be baptized. He performed miracles, including raising someone from the dead. And yet, he didn't turn people to something they should feel or do. He must have trusted the Scriptures because he turned people to the ancient promises more than their present feelings to move them forward through trial and in mission together.

Closing Sermon Text | 2 Peter 1:16-21
16
For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” 18 we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. 19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

If we understand that the Scriptures are a gift from God like Peter did, we will be like a newborn, hungry and needy for the Word. We will come to God like children in the night, crying out for His warm embrace and the nourishing milk of His Word given by His Spirit through those He used to write down His story for us.

RECEIVING JESUS WORSHIP THROUGH CONFESSION AND COMMUNION

BEING SENT BY THE HOLY SPIRIT | WORSHIP THROUGH PRAISE, MISSION, AND BLESSING

2013 A.D.

You call me out upon the waters,
The great unknown
Where feet may fail.
And there I find
You in the mystery.
In oceans deep,
My faith will stand.

And I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves.
When oceans rise
My soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine.

Your grace abounds
 In deepest waters.
Your sovereign hand
Will be my guide
Where feet may fail
And fear surrounds me.
You've never failed
And You won't start now.
(Repeat Chorus)

Spirit lead me where
My trust is without borders.
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever You would call me.
Take me deeper than
My feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior.
(Repeat 3x)

I will call upon Your Name.
Keep my eyes above the waves.
My soul will rest in Your embrace.
I am Yours and You are mine.
1836 A.D.

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood
And righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

When darkness seems to
Hide His face,
I rest on His unchanging grace,
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.

On Christ the Solid Rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.

His oath, His covenant, His blood
Support me in the whelming flood.
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my Hope and Stay!

When He shall come
With trumpet sound,
Oh may I then in Him be found.
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne!

Prayer for Ladies' Night at Nu Cafe

Benediction

"Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be revealed through the revelation of Jesus Christ.
