Do we see Jesus as precious? If we don't see Him as precious as He is, then we won't see ourselves as precious as the Father does. Jesus
is building His Church. He is the powerful cornerstone. Do we calmly
come to the Lord and pray and hope for a spiritual house being built up
in Worcester? How will we proclaim the excellencies of
Jesus to Worcester?
Alastair Sterne is a founding pastor of
St. Peter’s Fireside, a recent church plant
in Vancouver, British Columbia. Not only do I think St. Peter’s Fireside is a
phenomenal name for a church, and not only do they describe themselves as “a
church joining God in the spiritual, social, and cultural renewal of Vancouver
through communities transformed by the gospel, all for the glory of God,” and
not only does their website and Alastair’s blog fill me both with awe and
jealousy at the same time, but Alastair also regularly hosts an event called Beer & Theology at a local pub,
aptly called “The Sin Bin.” This past week, I was reading one of Alastair’s
posts entitled “Atheism Helps My Faith.” In this post, Alastair describes how
each month, he has conversations with atheists, seekers, saints, skeptics, and
alien-believers as they grab a pint and chat. One friend he’s made is an
atheist and Alastair provides reflections on conversations with this friend.
Alastair describes that first, atheism helps his faith in relation to the
inspiration and authority of Scripture. One evening his friend said, “You Christians think that God wrote the Bible, right?” to which I said
“That’s a rather blunt way of stating it, but sure.” He went on,
"Here’s what I don’t understand. I ask Christians all the time if they
read their Bible and they often say ‘No.’ Seriously? If I believed I had a
book written by God I would read the s**t out of that
book!" Alastair writes that “Perhaps this is a tad crass, but its a solid,
solid point.” He then goes on to explain, “If we took seriously the inspiration
and authority of the Scripture, we would actually read it on a regular basis
and commit our lives to its call. If we find that we aren’t reading our Bibles,
or if we aren’t letting Scripture be the authoritative norm in our lives, then
its possible that we haven’t seriously considered what we hold in our hands. As
I have figured out different ways to explain the inspiration of Scripture to my
friend, I have found that not only my love for Scripture has increased, but
also my certainty in its trustworthiness. It is a immensely valuable gift from
God.”

the sight of God chosen and precious, 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a
spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices
acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it stands in Scripture: ‘Behold, I am laying in Zion a
stone,
a cornerstone chosen and precious,
and whoever believes in him will not
be put to shame.’ (Isaiah 28:16) 7 So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do
not believe, ‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone,’
8 and ‘A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.’ They
stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. 9 But you are a chosen
race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that
you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into
his marvelous light. (Ex. 19:6; Isaiah 61:6, 66:21; Deut. 7:6; Isaiah 43:12;
Malachi 3:17; Psalm 36:9) 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people;

1. The Precious Cornerstone

1. The Precious Cornerstone

Peter backs up how
precious Jesus is by once again turning back to the Old Testament Word of God
as a foundation for presenting the cornerstone.
Jesus is precious to us because it is only through Him that we can offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God (1 Peter 2:5). Jesus was put to shame so that our sins would be covered. He was made naked and beaten so that we could be clothed and healed.

2. The Powerful Cornerstone

mission strategy to the world. Our strategy must be to litter the world with
communities of light. This encapsulates God’s eternal purpose, at the heart of

hard thing. The real question is what happens once the startup loses the
new shine? What do you do when the cause feels too daunting, or attendance is

persist through a great endeavor when it just doesn’t feel as great anymore? We
had the audacious belief that we could bring clean water to millions of people
in Africa and bring health care to thousands of families in HIV-affected
communities. Imagining those goals was not the hard part. Following through on
vision, persisting with grit despite the self-doubt – that has been hard.” –

3. The Proclaiming Cornerstone
Peter moves us from identity to action.

We're willing to follow Jesus in starting a church. How will we endure when it becomes harder than we ever dreamed or imagined to continue to be His church? Will we look to Jesus who has been faithful to His Church, through all of the messes and selfishness, and see how He has persevered and will continue to keep His promises?

What
are your passions? What is your greatest desire that comes to mind more than
any other? What is your greatest pain that comes to you more than any other?
Because we will most often obey our passions. But if our passion is not
ultimately Jesus, then our passion cannot give us joy that will lead us into
His light, or anyone else.
“Paul’s radical commitment to Christ
arises from his delight in Christ … Our job is to give people such joy in
Christ that the treasures and temptations of this earth look like pathetic
alternatives. … You will never attract
people to Jesus if you are not excited about Jesus. Enthusiasm creates
interest. Passion breeds passion. … The joy of the Lord is our strength,
Nehemiah 8:10 says, but there is not joy in just obeying rules. Enthusiasm for
evangelism begins with an enthusiasm for Jesus. Our willingness to speak of
Jesus arises from our delight in Jesus.. … A passion for Jesus means he matters
more to us than other people. His opinion is the one that counts. … Do not
think about how you can communicate a passion for Jesus to others. … Meditate
on Jesus until he captures your heart afresh.” – Tim Chester and Steve Timmis
If we truly believe Jesus is the most
precious jewel we could ever be given, and we believe that God has given Him
all authority in heaven and on earth, and if we rejoice in all of the above, we
won't be able to help but proclaim Him in word and deed as individuals and
together.

are guilty sinners: we fail to thank You, God, we break Your
laws, we ignore Your tasks for us. Looking for life without You, we find
death; grasping for freedom outside the law, we trap ourselves in Satan's
snares; pursuing pleasure, we lose the gift of joy. ... (But in Jesus) We rejoice in Your goodness, renounce the works of
darkness, and dedicate ourselves to holy living. As covenant
partners, set free for joyful obedience, we offer our hearts and
lives to do Your work in the world. With tempered

Lord. We are confident that the light which shines in the
present darkness will fill the earth when Christ appears. Come,
